Wednesday, October 8, 2008 6pm - 8pm Jewels in the Square Presents Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble The Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble (LJYE) of San Francisco is a performing group of talented musicians ages ten to 18. They perform Latin jazz classics and original compositions at a level that has landed them gigs at the San Jose Jazz Festival, the KCSM Jazz Festival, KGO Radio, Yerba Buena Gardens, SF Museum of Modern Art, Paramount's Great America and the world-renown jazz club, Yoshi’s. The LJYE has shared the stage with legendary performers such as the great Cuban bassist, Cachao; piano virtuoso Chuchito Valdes; Latin jazz heavyweights Poncho Sanchez and Clare Fischer; and the Grammy Award-winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra. The LJYE mission is to preserve the traditions of Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban music by teaching it to youth and to create role models for aspiring student musicians.
Sunday, October 12, 2008 2pm - 4pm Jewels in the Square Presents Non-Stop Bhangra Collective The Non-Stop Bhangra Collective is a San Francisco based group consisting of cutting edge Dj's, dancers, drummers, emcee’s, live paintings and visuals. With a strong desire to bring Bhangra to the masses, the group has blazed a trail by presenting Punjabi music in a fresh way; an accessible approach which leaves no one out. Mixing traditional tracks as well as remixes, all fused with live dhol drums and scratching, dance lessons, and performances.
Teaming up with local non-profits and organizations promoting the arts, the collective is always focused on helping the greater world community and raising awareness to embrace a more global conscious unity through music & dance.

Jewels in the Square and ShadowLight Productions Presents a special free Halloween performance of The Metamorphosis of Karaghiozis (CAR-E-GO-SIS). Award-winning shadow artist Leonidas Kassapides joins live musicians to perform the traditional Greek form of storytelling with shadow puppetry.
The Metamorphosis of Karaghiozis epitomizes the comical tradition of Greek Shadow Theatre, featuring the beloved folk hero, Karaghiozis. Set during the Ottoman Empire, The Metamorphosis of Karaghiozis is an adventure full of action, comedy and spectacular confrontations with a monster that turns humans into strange creatures. Join our endlessly hilarious hero Karaghiozis as he cleverly solves conflict. This show is performed in English and is appropriate for all ages.
